Scout/Pines

Scout/Pines

Scout/Pines is a painter who uses the street as his canvas.

The Chatham, New York-based artist leaves his stencil-art paintings on abandoned buildings in distressed communities, where they are found by passers-by. He uses spray paint and house paint on reclaimed materials like plywood and old metal to depict real-life people on the periphery: the have-nots and marginalized. He often portrays historical figures — heavyweight boxer Joe Louis, Native American leader Sitting Bull, a young Johnny Cash — taking care to place the paintings in neighborhoods where the art has meaning to people living there.

Scout/Pines, née Brian Buono, is a self-taught DIY artist. He learned the craft of stenciling from friend and co-conspirer Chris Stain (a New York City mural artist) while both worked together in the screen-printing department at Equal Vision Records, an upstate New York independent music label. Before dedicating himself to art, Buono was a punk drummer, playing first in the late ‘80s skate-punk band Glee Club and then in the ’90s indie rock band Beef. His artistic influences include Chris Stain, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Ellsworth Kelly, who lived and worked in nearby Spencertown, New York.
